ESSENTIAL OILS & the IMMUNE SYSTEM (abbreviated outline of upcoming teleconference)

Essential Oils and the Immune System

FUNCTIONS OF A COMPETENT IMMUNE SYSTEM:
  1. Discriminate
  2. Eliminate

IMMUNE SYSTEM ISSUES: Weak (underactive) vs. Unbalanced (overactive)

CAUSES OF IMMUNE SYSTEM WEAKNESS:

  • Genetic causes (Primary Immune Deficiency Conditions)
  • Poor nutrition and poor sanitary conditions
  • Some medications
  • Lack of sleep and violation of normal diurnal rhythms
  • Chronic viral or bacterial infections
  • Chronic stress

HOW ESSENTIAL OILS CAN BE USED TO STRENGTHEN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM:

  • Antipathogenic essential oils can aid the immune system by reducing the pathogen load
  • Immunostimulant essential oils can act directly on the immune system and increase its function (since the lymphatic system can be considered a part of the immune system this includes essential oils that are lymphatic stimulants)
  • Depurative essential oils can be used to help remove toxins from the body
  • Essential oils that have relaxing, calming, anxiolytic and mood improving properties can be used to help achieve long lasting improvements in immune function through stress reduction.
  • Amphoteric vs. adaptogenic essential oils

HOW STRESS AFFECTS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

... poor prognosis is given to those who are afflicted by intensely negative emotions... hatred, violence, grief, ingratitude, and other distorted expressions of the emotions are much stronger than the body's ability to maintain balance. When the patient is unwilling or unable to abandon these passions they will create new diseases just as fast as the doctor can remove the old ones.

Astangahradaya Sustrasthana

PHYSIOLOGICAL PATHWAYS OF STRESS EFFECTS

  • Sympathetic Nervous System
  • Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenocortical Axis

POTENTIAL EFFECTS OF CHRONICALLY ELEVATED CORTISOL

  • Atrophy of thymus gland
  • Weakened immune system/increased susceptibility to infection
  • Diabetes
  • Arteriosclerosis
  • Hypertension
  • Osteoporosis
  • Faster aging
  • Cell loss in the hippocampus
  • Suppression of the manufacture of DHEA

ADRENAL FATIGUE SYNDROME

ESSENTIAL OILS TO INCORPORATE INTO A COMPREHENSIVE INTERVENTION TO MANAGE CHRONIC STRESS AND DECREASE ITS NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON HEALTH....

Bill the Bear

Dr. Joie Power is working on several project for the new year:

  • An Aromatherapy Correspondence Course - expected completion date: late Fall / early Winter
  • A Workshop on Chinese Medicine - probably in 2013
  • Online Essential Oil Data Sheets (for Aromatherapy Students & Grads only) - some are already available
We'll be sure to let you know when these projects completed.

Visit by Bill the Bear: Recently we've had a few visits here at Wyldhaven from one of the "locals". Bill the Bear came to empty our bird feeders. He seems to be a nice sort of fellow but we've begun taking the feeders inside every evening. Hopefully our friend will find plenty of berries and nuts elsewhere.

As you can see from the pciture, he seems to love smelling the flowers so we're guessing he's a big fan of aromatherapy.
